All About The Steelpan

The steelpan, widely known as the steel drum, was invented in Trinidad and Tobago. It is one of the few versatile acoustic instruments invented in the 20th century.

Hammered into the shiny metal surface is a series of dents. Each one creates a different note, subtly different from the ones around it, according to their position and size

Its genesis arose out of the struggle to find a musical expression to replace the restrictions on the African drum during slavery. From it`s humble beginning the steel drum has evolved into a bona fide instrument that can play any genre of music

Evoking the spirit of rebellion, modernity and innovation that inspired the birth of the steelpan - PanJam takes a step forward fusing the majestic instrument with cutting edge virtual reality and gesture recognition technology to make it the first of its kind.

Our Vision

Around the world, people are fascinated with the unique character of the sound of the steelpan. Yet, very few people have had the opportunity to actually play the instrument and for those that do it is a truly an unforgettable musical experience. We aim to create a virtual experience that allows people all over the world to experience what it is like to play and learn a steelpan

The Museum

A big part of the PanJam experience teleports viewers to a "convincingly real" digitally generated museum. Viewers can feel a sense of presence and immersion as they browse exhibits of artifacts, vintage instruments, tuning tools, local art and a ten foot tall timeline displaying key historic events in the evolution of the steelpan. To date, no museum dedicated to the steelpan exists in the real world so the virtual original gives viewers a fantastic and unique immersive experience.
